Teaching

I teach applied economics at Utrecht University across all four teaching periods, and I supervise theses at both Bachelor's and Master's level. On some of these modules I lecture, on others I run the tutorials.

Utrecht University

  • Period 1

    Public Choice and Welfare

Two ways of looking at what governments actually do. The welfare economics view, where the state steps in when markets fail, and the public choice view, which asks what happens once you stop assuming a benevolent planner and start modelling the interests of the actors involved, politicians, civil servants and voters included.

  • Period 2

    Philosophy, Politics and Economics

Theories of justice from contemporary political philosophy, read by economists. We work mostly on Dworkin's equality of resources and Roemer's equality of opportunity, and on whether equity and efficiency really have to trade off against each other as often as economists assume.

  • Period 2

    Economics and Social Justice

How theories of justice get turned into economic models, and what they imply for actual social and economic policy. Students pick a book, read what other people made of it, and argue it out in front of the class.

  • Period 3

    Data Science Lab for Economists

Student teams take a project of their own through the whole arc of a piece of research. They build a question worth asking, check that the data can actually answer it, and then answer it, either forecasting with machine learning or explaining with econometrics. They present the result and write it up as a paper. That process, rather than the answer they land on, is what they are marked on.

  • Period 4

    Economics of the Public Sector

Micro and macro applied to what governments actually do. Which tasks belong with the public sector and which are better left to the market, when intervention improves on the alternative, and how spending and taxation are designed once you take the political nature of the questions seriously. The course runs on argument as much as on the theoretical framework.

  • Periods 3–4

    Thesis supervision

Master's theses in Economic Policy, from the first research idea through to the final manuscript, and the Applied Economics Research Course, the concluding third-year project where Bachelor's students run a small piece of independent research and write it up.
